This morning you will visit the lost city of Pompeii and its excavations which hold an intense fascination for visitors today. After the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in the year 79 AD, Pompeii lay buried and forgotten for hundreds of years. The ancient Roman town is high on the list of Wonders of the World and the excavations begun in the 18th century are still being carried out today. View the remarkably preserved ruins of temples, houses, gardens and public buildings. In the afternoon we make our way to the volcano Vesuvius the only active one on the European continent which dominates the Bay of Naples. You’ll be met by an expert Alpine guide who will lead you on foot along a panoramic hiking trail to view the ancient Somma Crater and the 1944 lava flow. We’ll eventually reach the height of 3000 feet where the inside of the crater is visible. You will return to the hotel
